Here's the truth nobody says out loud at a careers fair: the job market right now is brutal, and it's worse if you're just starting out. Every graduate we know has an idea. A real one — something they've thought through, something that could actually work. And almost none of them can get funded. Not because the idea is bad. Because they don't know the right people, don't have the right accent, didn't go to the right university, don't have a father who can make an introduction.
That's not a talent problem. That's a gatekeeping problem. A small number of people — funds, incubators, "angels" who only write checks for people who remind them of themselves — get to decide whose idea deserves a shot and whose doesn't. Most founders never even get in the room. Not because they're not good enough. Because the room was never built for them.
We got tired of asking permission
So here's the idea that started this: what if we stopped waiting for a small number of powerful people to decide who gets to build something? What if instead, a few hundred ordinary people — the kind of people who'd never get a meeting with a VC — pooled a few hundred pounds each, and backed each other instead?
You don't need a lot of resources to get started. You need enough people who believe in you to get you on the runway. Five hundred pounds from two hundred people is a hundred thousand pounds — enough for a real startup to get off the ground. Nobody needed to be rich. Nobody needed the right last name. Everyone just needed to say yes.
The bet we're making
If a couple hundred people back fifty or sixty ideas between them — some money, some time, some expertise, whatever they've got to give — some of those ideas are going to work. Not all of them. Nobody's promising that. But you don't need all of them to work. You need a few. And a few is more than the current system gives most people a shot at.
That's the whole bet. Diversify your capital and your expertise across people you actually believe in, instead of waiting for someone with a fund to notice you exist. Nobody's coming to save us. So we're doing it ourselves, together.
